Short answer: you don’t have to beat the urge itself. Change what happens next. Give your eyes and hands something to do, get out of the place where you usually watch, and follow a plan you made before the urge showed up. Urges rise and fall, and you don’t have to act on one.

How long does a porn urge last?

Nobody has measured it. You’ll see “urges pass in 10 minutes” online, but no study backs a number for porn. In lab studies of smoking, cravings were still high 15 minutes in, and in one study they hadn’t dropped after 30 minutes (Heishman and colleagues, 2004 and 2010). So don’t wait for a timer. Plan to do something while the urge is there.

1. Give your eyes and hands something to do

Urges often show up as pictures in your head. A game that keeps your eyes busy competes with those pictures. In a 2015 study, people who played Tetris for three minutes when a craving hit rated it about 14 points weaker on a 0–100 scale, and that included cravings for sex (Skorka-Brown and colleagues, 2015). Pick something visual: falling blocks, fitting shapes, a picture puzzle. Here’s what that research tested.

2. Get out of the place where you usually watch

Habits are tied to places and routines. In one study, students who moved to a new university kept their old habits only when the same cues came with them (Wood, Tam and Witt, 2005). Habits also weakened when the setting or the routine around them changed (Neal and colleagues, 2011). If it usually happens in bed with your phone, get up, turn the light on, and go to another room.

3. Decide what you’ll do before the urge shows up

Write an “if-then” plan: “If I’m in bed and want to watch, then I put the phone on the desk and open a game.” Across 94 tests, plans like this helped people reach their goals (Gollwitzer and Sheeran, 2006). They’re weaker against very strong habits (Webb, Sheeran and Luszczynska, 2009), so pair the plan with a change to your surroundings.

4. Notice the urge without doing what it says

This is sometimes called urge surfing: you notice the urge, name it, and let it rise and fall without acting. In a study of student smokers, urge surfing didn’t make the urges weaker, but the group smoked fewer cigarettes over the next week (Bowen and Marlatt, 2009). Research on porn is early: a small pilot of a mindfulness program for compulsive sexual behavior (Holas and colleagues, 2020) and a small trial of acceptance and commitment therapy with 28 men (Crosby and Twohig, 2016) both found less porn use.

5. Make it harder ahead of time

Researchers who reviewed self-control strategies argue that changing the situation ahead of time works better than relying on willpower in the moment (Duckworth, Gendler and Gross, 2016). Keep the phone out of the bedroom at night, and block the sites and apps you usually open. Apple’s Screen Time can limit adult websites, and quit-porn apps such as Forth can block the apps and sites you choose. See how the apps compare.

If you slip

Note what led up to it, like the time, the place and how you felt, and use that to adjust your plan. In journals people kept while quitting, cues for cravings were everywhere, and people who managed to stop leaned on practical strategies and support from others (Fernandez, Kuss and Griffiths, 2021). If you’re struggling, a therapist who works with compulsive sexual behavior can help. In studies so far, therapy approaches such as CBT and ACT reduced problematic porn use (López-Pinar, Esparza-Reig and Bőthe, 2025), though many of the studies had a high risk of bias.

Where Forth fits

Forth puts steps 1, 3 and 5 on your iPhone. When an urge hits, you open a short visual game. A quick assessment gives you a plan. Optional Screen Time blocking covers the apps and sites you choose. Your plan and progress stay on your phone. Forth is a self-help tool, not therapy.

Questions

How long does a porn urge last?

No study has measured it for porn. In lab studies of smoking, cravings stayed high for 15 to 30 minutes. Plan something to do while the urge is there, rather than waiting it out.

Does playing a game help with porn urges?

A visual game can make an urge weaker for a few minutes. In a 2015 study, three minutes of Tetris cut craving strength by about 14 points on a 0–100 scale, including cravings for sex. The study tested Tetris, not porn specifically.

What is urge surfing?

Noticing an urge and letting it rise and fall without acting on it. In a 2009 study of student smokers, it didn’t make urges weaker, but people smoked less over the following week.
